Assignment at Belfast Zoo with Life Drawing class;
To collect first hand studies of animals at the zoo. From the studies design your own character inspired by four animals.
Produce a turnaround and manipulate your character into four different poses, showing the design can be animated.
In terms of studies, I knew I wanted a fun, rounded monkey/gorilla torso to draw weighty poses with. Elephants are a favourite of mine, so I wanted to incorporate some element of their distinct features. Other than that, I drew what I found especially beautiful or dynamic.
Some preliminary sketches;
A giraffe’s ‘mohawk’ and hooves, meerkat’s posture and head, elephant ears, seal flippers and monkey’s torso.
At first, I was inspired by a meerkat I saw lounging on a pipe for a lazier character, but as I drew I saw the character’s face and body translating as graceless, silly and nervous – attempted to reflect in the poses.
